This morning I met with a couple young, newly minted business owners to talk about updating their website. Besides talking about the vision they had for their presence online, we also had a small chat about some of the work they’d been doing behind the scenes so they could relaunch a business they’d just taken over and make it their own. I was really impressed with their focus and the grind they’ve been on to make things happen. It occurred to me that for small business owners, it’s the work we do when no one is watching that leads to success. And there’s plenty of it. So here’s to you small business owners, grinding away to put a smile on the faces of your customers and bring value to your community. The importance of good design can’t be overstated. People prefer easy. Reduce friction for your customers. Make it easy for them to do business with you. Easy to buy from you. It took me a few moments to figure out what to do with this buzzer. And if your website or direct email marketing or any part of the process your customers go through to do business with you is anything like what you see in this picture (unnecessarily complex, confusing and time consuming), you’re missing out on opportunities to build a connection with customers who decide you’re just too hard to do business with. Where could you make improvements or reduce friction for your customers? Maybe it’s the phone tree they have to go through before talking to an actual human; maybe your paper based, manual ordering system could be replaced with an online store; maybe your returns policy needs to be reviewed; maybe your website has too much information on it...
